The Formant Comparison between Chinese Whispered and Voiced Vowels
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, an improved dynamic programming (IDP) algorithm based on wild card mechanism and continuity constraint for the formant tracking is proposed, and the ratios of Chinese whispered to voiced formants are statistically analyzed. Experiments were performed on six Chinese simple blade vowels with four tones uttered by 20 speakers. The formant differences are quantified by the ratios of Chinese whispered to voiced formants. It is found that the whispered formants shift to higher frequencies and expand to wider bandwidths. On the other hand, the difference between F2 and F1 of four tones from the largest to the smallest is Tone 1, Tone 2, Tone 4 and Tone 3 in the whispered vowels. These results could be helpful to the research on the Chinese whispered speech conversion and recognition.

Time-varying spectral change in the vowels of children and adults.
Recent studies have shown that time-varying changes in formant pattern contribute to the phonetic specification of vowels. This variation could be especially important in children's vowels, because children have higher fundamental frequencies (f0's) than adults, and formant-frequency estimation is generally less reliable when f0 is high. To investigate the contribution of time-varying changes i...
متن کاملA comprehensive vowel space for whispered speech.
Whispered speech is a relatively common form of communications, used primarily to selectively exclude or include potential listeners from hearing a spoken message. Despite the everyday nature of whispering, and its undoubted usefulness in vocal communications, whispers have received relatively little research effort to date, apart from some studies analyzing the main whispered vowels and some q...
متن کاملStudy and Comparison of Formant Characteristics of Persian Vowels in 4-7-year-old Children Using Cochlear Implants and Those Using Hearing Aids
Background and Objective: One of the most important physical properties of vowels is their formant structure. One of the most obvious speech errors in hearing-impaired children is vowel errors. The present study aimed to determine and compare the formant structure of Persian vowels in deaf and cochlear implant children in the age range of 4-7 years. Materials and Methods: This descriptive-anal...
متن کاملSpeaker-Sex Discrimination for Voiced and Whispered Vowels at Short Durations
Whispered vowels, produced with no vocal fold vibration, lack the periodic temporal fine structure which in voiced vowels underlies the perceptual attribute of pitch (a salient auditory cue to speaker sex). Voiced vowels possess no temporal fine structure at very short durations (below two glottal cycles). The prediction was that speaker-sex discrimination performance for whispered and voiced v...

The results from the change in VTL discrimination experiments show that, of the five places in the GPR-VTL plane tested, four showed no significant difference between the voiced and whispered vowel conditions (Figs 2-3, Panels 5-6). There was a significant difference only at the high GPR-short VTL position [320 Hz, 9.4 cm], where VTL discrimination performance with whispered vowels was signific...
